What is Pay Per Click (PPC)?

PPC stands for pay per click and it is the most common "pay for performance" online advertising. Pay for performance means that you only pay once you achieve a goal. So, in the case of pay per click, you will only pay if someone clicks on the link that will lead to your website.

Some people get confused between CPC (cost per click) and PPC (pay per click). Pay per Click is the type of advertising, whilst "cost per click" is how much you pay per click on a "pay per click" advertising campaign.

Pay per click is available on most search engines, but as we will talk about the
major ones:

Google AdWords – Google Pay Per Click

Google is the biggest search engine and because it is the one that will bring you the biggest number of visitors to your site, that is the one we concentrate most our efforts on. Google's pay per click advertising is called "AdWords"

Yahoo! Search Marketing – Yahoo Pay Per Click

With a recent merge between Bing and Yahoo, this means that Yahoo Search Marketing will eventually cease to exist.

Microsoft AdCentre – Bing Pay Per Click

Bing will incorporate Yahoo Search Marketing advertising and eventually became the second major search engine. So, from a web strategy point of view, this pay per click will be worth looking at along with AdWords.

How Does Pay Per Click Fit in Your Web Strategy

SEO (search engine optimisation) is an organic process and has to be carefully thought to achieve the desired results. Also as an organic process, it takes time. So if you need quick results, it is usually recommended to run a pay per click campaign whilst the SEO is building momentum.

In a web strategy it is also common to use pay per click for some seasonal keywords, like "Christmas hampers" or "Valentines days".

Benefits of Having a Pay Per Click Campaign

With pay per click, you get quick results and you only pay when people click on your link. Whilst it can be expensive on the long run, it is certainly something that should be considered as a holistic web strategy.

Search Engine Optimisation and Pay Per Click

As well as being quite costly in the long run, it is well researched that people's perspective on the "sponsored" or "ad" results is usually not the best and most will prefer to find their option on the organic results which you will achieve with search
engine optimisation
